6 professional learning activities for the new school year

If you’re looking to kick start your professional learning this term, we’ve highlighted six learning activities on the SCEL Framework for Educational Leadership which are perfect for the new session.

Adopting a practitioner enquiry approach to developing classroom practice

If you’re looking to make an informed change in your practice this session which impacts upon the children and young people in your care, this learning activity will support you to do this through a practitioner enquiry approach.

This learning activity will support you to:

  • develop an understanding of the nature and purpose of practitioner enquiry
  • be able to take an enquiring approach to developing an aspect of classroom practice
  • reflect upon the leadership skills which have been developed through practitioner enquiry

Undertaking reading of research, legislation and policy

If you’re keen to develop your ability to use research and policy to inform your practice this session, this learning activity will support you to be able to access different sources and use these effectively.

This learning activity will support you to:

  • develop an understanding of how to critically engage with literature
  • explore different sources for accessing literature
  • consider the ways in which literature can be used to inform practice

Supporting the professional learning of a probationer teacher or student

At the point of the year when Newly Qualified Teachers are joining your school or department, this activity is an opportunity to develop your own learning and the learning of others through establishing a mentoring or coaching role with a probationer teacher or student.

This learning activity will support you to:

  • develop an understanding of the mentoring and coaching processes and the necessary leadership skills involved
  • develop your own learning and the learning of others through establishing a mentoring and/or coaching relationship with a student or probationer teacher
  • reflect upon the leadership skills developed through leading the learning of others

Using an improvement methodology for improvement

This learning activity will support you to:

This learning activity will help you to reflect on the culture for professional learning within your establishment and support you to build staff capacity.

  • evaluate the extent to which leadership is distributed throughout your school or setting
  • consider how to create a culture in which leadership capacity can be developed

Implementing a shared vision for improvement

As you embark on implementing strategic plans for this school session, this learning activity provides an opportunity to reflect on school improvement practices in your establishment to support you towards positive outcomes for learners.

This learning activity will support you to:

  • develop an organisational vision which is unique and contextually relevant for your school or early learning setting
  • develop policies and initiate actions aimed at realising the vision
